anti fascist rally

A rally took place on saturday in wrexham town centre, over 200 people marched through the town consisting of local trade unionist and local politicians. Trade unions and local activist brought their banners and flags and we all marched behind the Wrexham trade council banner.
The march was joined from peolple from cardiff and newport as well as collegues from bangor.
the march was followed by a rally in the miners inst at which there were speaches from Derek Walker of the Wales TUC, Peter Jones from Searchlight and Andy Richards Regional secretary of Unite the Union ( formally T&GWU and Amicus).
The event was an excellent demonstration of feeling amongst ordinary people in wrexham and across wales of the extreem distaste of the emergence of the BNP in the local elections across Wales.

community council

On tuesday i attended the funeral of John Mike Griffiths the chairman of the community council. it was a lovely service and the church was full of people who had known John Mike for many years, during the service Lee the eldest of his two sons said a few words in tribute to his father, Lee told of his dads life and the work his father had done in the community and it struck me that even when you work alongside someone in the community ,until someone tells you the list of things that a person does we never realise the commitment people make to a community.
In our communities there are many people contributing to the daily life of those communities and thank god we have so many people who are prepared to give something back sometimes.
our deepest condonelences to John Mike,s family and thankyou for sharing him with us.

fire safety christmas campaign

Today i visited with the Mayor the Wrexham fire station to launch the christmas fire safety campaign.
We were told that during the night there had been a serious fire in the stair well of a block of flats at Bryn Hafod Caia Park.
we were told by fire officers that the cause of the fire was a old sofa being left in the stair well, awaiting disposal . Some one then decided to set light to this sofa. There were twelve people living in the six flats and fortunately there were no serious injuries or deaths due to the existing smoke alarms and the response of the fire service to rescue those in the flats.

Safer schools

As the vice chair of the North Wales Fire Authority, you could say I have a personal interest. I have experienced the devastation fire at a school can cause to the school, its pupils and the community. Fortunately this fire at Ysgol Y gaer happened at night, if a fire did occur during the school day I dread to think of the consequence's. This why I am pressing Wrexham Council to adopt a policy of installing sprinklers in all our schools and especially the new and refurbished schools that we are intending to work on in the coming years.
sprinkler are so essential to help save life . This is so important not only in our schools but also in our homes and workplaces.
To start the ball rolling I have ask the council to give a report on why we do not intend to install sprinklers in the new Rhos schools, I await that report with interest.

ROYAL COURT

I had the pleasure to visit the Royal Court warden controlled flats at Bickerton drive gwersyllt yesterday. It was the official opening by the Mayor Cllr George James of the building following the refurbishment. i was really impressed to see how the accommodation had changed and how some flats have been converted into accommodation for rest bite care and people coming out of hospital as a transitional care facility before going home.
I would like express my thanks to all the officers who worked so hard to make this a resource that the local authority and the health people can use for the benefit of our communities.
following that event i attended, a workshop where councillors were agreeing our priorities for the next year and providing care for older people in their homes was one that we have agreed for a few years however having visited Royal Court I felt that it should state that our priority should be amended to say PROVIDING CARE FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN A HOME OF THEIR CHOICE.

Energy Seminar report

The seminar that was held on saturday was a great success with over thirty people coming to hear our speakers. We had a speaker from the nuclear field who gave a very interesting talk on what nuclear could offer a balanced energy strategy, also we had a local member of the Wrexham TUC who explored the opportunities in renewable energy and how we should be supporting our local sharp factory in its production of solar panels.then finaly we had a trade union officer giving us a trade union view on the importance of ensuring there is sufficient energy availible at affordable prices to maintain our manufacturing and service industry jobs. we then had a question and answer session which raised several issues which our panel responded to .again it was a informative seminar that was enjoyed by all and our thanks to our speakers and the audience who came along to make it a success.

WREXHAM FIRE FIGHTERS WALK FOR LIFE

I was at wrexham fire station last night to witness the presentation of two cheques to the total value of£5520 that was raised by the retained fire fighters through the sponsored 10 mile walk through the town center a couple weeks ago.
congratulations to those firefighters from wrexham, llangollen, johnstown and mold fire stations who took part in this walk wearing full firefighting kit plus breathing apparatus and a special thanks to watch manager and his crew for organising the event, as a fire authority member it never ceases to amaze me the commitment of our fire fighters in our community.
the recipients of this money are the shooting star unit, the testicular cancer fund at ysbyty glan clwyd and the fire services national benevolent fund.
